CLOVES, GROUND
CLOVESGR-16
Description:
Native to Southeast Asia, the Clove tree is an Evergreen tree with large oval leaves and crimson blossoms. Cloves are the aromatic dried flower buds of the tree. When fresh, they are pink, and when dried, they turn to a rust-brown color. Known by the Latin name, Clavus, meaning, “nail”, Cloves resemble small nails or tacks with a slender stem. Cloves can be used in cooking either whole or in a ground form, but as they are extremely strong, they should be used sparingly. Ground Cloves are used mainly in baking while whole Cloves can be used to enhance the flavor of pork, ham, and wild game by inserting them into the item and then cooking. Used by many cultures as incense, Cloves have been used medicinally for digestive complaints, nausea, toothache, and gout. Cloves pair well with other types of spices and can be used as an accent in some dishes or center stage in others.
