HABANERO, CRUSHED

HABANERO, CRUSHED

Description:

Visually, this small lantern-shaped pepper looks innocent enough but it packs a hearty kick!  Habanero Chiles are one of the hottest chiles around but beneath that scathing heat is a fruity flavor that makes this pepper so extremely popular.  Habanero means "havana-like", a reference to its possible origins. The Habanero is the only pepper grown in the Yucatan that has no Mayan name. Speculation suggests this colorful chile originated in South America, then made its way into the Caribbean and Central America via Columbia.  The Habanero ranges from light green to bright orange when fully ripened.  Typically about 2 inches long this pepper is best handled with gloves!  Scoville heat units are 150,000 to 350,000.  Also known as Scotch Bonnet.  Crushed Habanero are small, 3/8 inch chopped pieces of the chile.

Suggested Use:

USE WITH CAUTION!!! Habanero are very, very hot!!! Add small amount at a time to fresh salsa, sauces, chili, and any recipe that you want to start a fire with!  Great with soft shell crawfish taquitos, spicy fish stew, warm crab and potato salad, and mango and Habanero hot sauce.  Try a small amount in tortilla soup and other Mexican recipes.
