The Black Walnut is one of the Midwest's most valuable tree species.  The Black Walnut is in high demand throughout the world for wood products because of its beautiful color, strength and durability.  Besides wood products, Walnut trees produce edible nuts that are a terrific source of nutrients.  The only problem is obtaining those nutrients.  Black Walnut shells are one of the hardest organic substances known.  The shells of the walnut are so hard that they are used to blast metal, marble and glass instead of using sand.  The nuts inside of the shell have a strong, rich smoky flavor that is dominant when using in recipes.  Chieftains Black Walnuts are chopped into pieces cutting down on prep time.  Popular in pastries, candies and breads, Black Walnuts can be used in wild rice stuffing, cheesecake, meatloaf and even with green beans.
