Description:
Ginger is commonly referred to as a root but is really a deer horn shaped rhizome of a perennial plant. Cultivated all over Asia, Ginger is native to tropical Asia and was introduced to Africa by the Portuguese and to the West Indies by the Spanish. Young Ginger is juicy, fleshy and mild while more mature Ginger is fibrous and pungent. Ginger, one of the oldest and most important spices has been used as an essential cooking spice as well as a medicinal staple. Ginger is believed to aid in digestion, alleviate stomach disorders, headaches and even the common cold and has been used to treat arthritis, colic and heart conditions. Cultured in tropical Asia for over 3000 years, Ginger is known for it’s ability to “warm” people. With its sweet, yet peppery taste, Ginger adds a spicy and fragrant splash to everyday cooking. Powdered Ginger has a much longer shelf life than the fresh version. Dried Ginger works well in many savory dishes, such as soups, curries, and meats, in many fruit dishes, and baked goods such as gingerbread and gingersnaps.
Powdered ginger is versatile in baked goods such as gingerbread, and gingersnaps. Superb in tea and hot milk, stir-fry, marinades, pickles, rice dishes, mulled wine and stew. Grilled sea bass fillets with tangy mango lime sauce, fragrant chicken curry, honey ginger ale, glazed chicken drumsticks, pork loin in orange sauce, grill prawns with papaya salsa, and ginger snap mini muffins are just a few recipes in which you may use Ginger.
