ALLSPICE, JAMAICAN

ALLSPICE, JAMAICAN

Description:

Allspice, also known as Newberry, Jamaica pepper, and Myrtle pepper, earned its name for its taste that combines the flavor of several different spices such as cloves, pepper, cinnamon and nutmeg.  Allspice is the fruit of the Pimenta dioica plant.  Allspice is picked green and unripe, then dried, at which time it resembles a large brown peppercorn.  The Spanish, who brought it back from the New World, introduced allspice to Europe.  Allspice is an important seasoning in cuisines worldwide.  Jamaican Allspice has been thought superior because of its higher oil content, better appearance and taste. Jamaican Allspice has a clove-like aroma and helps to relieve indigestion and gas.  Allspice is used in jerk seasoning, Jamaican soups, stews, and curries as well as in pickling spice, spiced tea mixes, dessert dishes, ketchup, pickles, and sausages.

Suggested Use:

The warm, sweet flavor lends itself to a variety of foods such as soups and stews, vegetables, pastas, grains, and dried beans.  It can also be used to enhance the flavor of sauces, desserts, chutneys, warm drinks like eggnog, mulled wine and hot chocolate.  Use in a marinade or in sweet breads.
