CARAWAY SEED
Description:
Caraway seed is the fruit of a biennial herb in the parsley family, known as Carum Carvi. Caraway has delicate leaves and white blossoms. Long used in European cooking, Caraway seeds are sweet yet strong and have a pungent flavor suggestive of anise. Caraway seed is a small, tan-brown seed that is about 1/5inch long and tapered at the ends. Caraway seed can be used in savory or sweet dishes. Used medicinally to cure a plethora of ailments including bronchitis, colds, fever, sore throat, infections and gingivitis, it can be chewed after meals as a digestive aid.
Suggested Use:
Caraway, a popular ingredient in English Seed Cake, is used in other desserts as well. Widely used in German, Hungarian and Austrian cooking. Caraway seeds flavor potatoes, cheese, bread, cake, meats, vegetables and sausages. Caraway can be used in Piragi, Irish soda bread, Hungarian goulash, Sauerkraut, Russian cabbage and is also used to flavor cheese.
