Description:
Available In-House Only... Black Gram, also known as "Urad Dal", are pulses that, although commonly called lentils, are actually related to cowpeas and mung beans. These highly prized pulses originated in India, where they are an important culinary ingredient that is used in popular dishes such as dal makhani, dosa, and papadum. Whole urad dal derive their strong, earthy flavor from their black skins which cover a creamy white interior. They are often used in curries and make a healthy addition to vegetarian or gluten-free dishes.
Ingredient Statement:
Black Lentils (may contain a trace percentage of cereal grains).
Recommended Preparation Instructions:
Add 1 cup of lentils to 4 cups of boiling water. Reduce heat and simmer, covered, until desired texture is reached. Drain any excess water. Cooking time will vary from 45 to 55 minutes.
One cup dry yields 1 to 1½ cups cooked.
